The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved." Confucius
Is comprised of combat veterans that have earned Masters in Social Work and Masters in Psychology degrees with the ultimate goal to assist military members and their families overcome their struggles from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other psychological issues in transitioning to civilian life. In addition, our support staff consists of a Gold Star Mom, military spouses, and families of combat veterans. Military families have witnessed their loved ones struggle with the memories of war and are also affected by the service members’ trauma. We understand the military culture because we have lived it.
We are currently in crisis when there are 22 veterans a day that commit suicide. Families are not being supported by the system. We need to include the family members when we are treating the veteran. In order for a veteran to survive the battle scars of war, we need to treat the family as a whole.
Our program incorporates the family system in order to support the veteran. When the family member(s) are included, the veteran no longer feels alone. In addition, the family members are then empowered and have a sense of purpose in assisting the veteran. Families will need support and relationship tools in order to successfully reintegrate with the veteran. This reintegration comes from counseling.
Our goal for the PTSD program is to create an environment that integrates the family system to assist the veteran. We call this “Back to Basics” in which communication skills are taught to the veteran and the spouse. “Homework” is assigned and the family has to accomplish the “homework” and the “homework” is then used for the duration of the relationship.
The battle may be over (for some), but the war continues for each service member and their families. In battle, we never leave anyone behind and we at Combat Vets Helping Combat Vets are here to help. Each of you has endured great hardships and we are here for you. We look forward to serving you, and we thank you very much for your sacrifices to our great country.
